If you're surprised that Marron Wellness Center offers acupuncture alongside its other forms of conservative care, you probably have questions about what this ancient practice can do for you. Here are some frequently asked questions about acupuncture at our Shrewsbury NJ clinic.
What is acupuncture? Acupuncture is a healing discipline that stretches back at 3,500 years. It involves inserting extremely thin needles into precise points along lines called meridians. The ancient healers believed that the flow of Qi (life force) along these lines could be disrupted, causing sickness and pain, and that the insertion of the needles redirected the Qi to restore health.
How does modern medicine view acupuncture? Modern medicine has discovered that acupuncture has a very real and beneficial effect on the human body. The needles boost calcium flow, which in turn triggers the production of natural painkillers called endorphins. The ancient acupuncturist's meridians also appear to correspond to nerve clusters that help govern the flow of nerve signals throughout the body.
What conditions can acupuncture treat? Acupuncture is a safe, effective means of pain relief, making it ideal for acute and chronic pain issues such as TMJ or sciatica. Its ability to optimize nerve signaling makes it effective for treating a variety of systemic diseases and disorders such as urinary problems, gastrointestinal issues, respiratory diseases and neurological dysfunction.
Are there any safety considerations? Acupuncture is extremely safe for the vast majority of the population. Before we proceed, we will make sure you have no underlying medical conditions that might present a problem. Side effects from acupuncture are very rare.
What should I do to prepare for an acupuncture session? It's best to eat lightly and avoid substances such as caffeine and nicotine for an hour and half before your session. Try to get a healthy amount of rest before the session as well.
How long is an acupuncture session? A typical acupuncture session may take less than 30 minutes, but the first session may take twice as long. That's because our Shrewsbury NJ acupuncturist, Scott Bendell, needs to evaluate your symptoms, medical history and general health before performing the actual treatment.
Does acupuncture hurt? Actually, acupuncture doesn't hurt at all. The needles are too fine to cause any significant sensation -- apart from the natural pain relief that they convey!
Can I pursue my normal activities immediately after an acupuncture session? We recommend giving yourself 90 minutes after the session before consuming the same substances you avoided prior to the session. Avoid heavy activities for two hours after acupuncture.
Is acupuncture covered by health insurance? Health insurance policies vary widely, but there's a good chance that your policy include acupuncture as a covered form of health care. Contact your provider for details before scheduling your appointment.
